Positioning: The Sentence Your Business Lives or Dies By
If you cannot say, in one sentence, why the right customer should choose you, the market will write its own sentence — and you will not like it.
Every business has a positioning sentence, whether it wrote one or not. It is the sentence a customer uses when they describe you to a friend. If you have not defined it, that sentence is being written by habit, by comparison, or by price.
A real positioning sentence has three parts: who you are for, what you are the obvious choice for, and why. 'We work with everyone' fails the first test. 'We are the best' fails the third — it is a claim, not a reason. The sentence only works when a specific person hears it and thinks: that is exactly for me.
The resistance to this work is always the same: it feels like turning business away. It is the opposite. A sharp position does not shrink your market; it gives your market a reason to find you. The businesses that try to be for everyone end up being chosen by no one in particular, on price.
Write the sentence. Test it against your last ten enquiries. If it would not have attracted the right ones and filtered the wrong ones, keep sharpening. Everything else in your marketing is downstream of this.
