Your Brand Is What People Say When You've Left the Room

A brand is not your logo, your palette or your tagline. It is the place you occupy in someone else's mind — and you do not control it, you earn it.

Ask a room of founders what their brand is and most will reach for the artefacts: the logo, the colours, the website. Those are expressions of a brand. The brand itself lives somewhere you cannot touch — in the minds of the people who have encountered you.

This is not a soft distinction; it is an operational one. If the brand is a position in someone's mind, then the work of branding is the work of deciding what that position should be and then making every touchpoint argue for it. Consistency is not about using the same font. It is about making the same argument, everywhere, for a long time.

Positioning is the sentence your business lives or dies by. Not a tagline — an internal sentence: for this audience, we are the obvious choice because of this reason. When that sentence is sharp, decisions get easy. Content writes itself. Sales conversations shorten. When it is vague, everything is uphill.

The uncomfortable truth is that you already have a brand — the market has already decided something about you, or decided you are not worth deciding about. The only question is whether you are going to shape that position deliberately or let it happen to you.
